{{Status|Proven}} '''Memory vendor and bus.''' Every 10 GB card carries Samsung HBM and every 8 GB card SK Hynix: Mr Pec stated it and RazK confirmed it on 2026-07-19, and Luna, supasnipa360 and Arcanum repeated it the next day. Thanos counted four working stacks on the 8 GB card and five on the 10 GB card, which gives coolgod's 4096-bit and 5120-bit buses. Arcanum: the 10 GB card's HBM runs at about 1215 MHz against about 1458 MHz on the 8 GB card, so the fifth stack roughly evens out the bandwidth. Whether the Samsung stacks are HBM2 or HBM2e is a separate debate ([[Which card do I have#Memory vendor]]). {{Source|handle=mrpec|date=2026-07-19|link=https://discord.com/channels/1518634379604136178/1518692084729511967/1528237071498739813}}
{{Source|handle=port00|date=2026-07-19|link=https://discord.com/channels/1518634379604136178/1518692084729511967/1528237071498739813}}
{{Source|handle=thanos8912|date=2026-07-19|link=https://discord.com/channels/1518634379604136178/1518692084729511967/1528255975381798984}}
{{Source|handle=coolgod_72592|date=2026-07-19|link=https://discord.com/channels/1518634379604136178/1518692084729511967/1528255975381798984}}
{{Source|handle=lunaroseoc|date=2026-07-20|link=https://discord.com/channels/1518634379604136178/1518692084729511967/1528787952367570955}}
{{Source|handle=supasnipa360|date=2026-07-20|link=https://discord.com/channels/1518634379604136178/1518692084729511967/1528787952367570955}}
{{Source|handle=_arcanum_|date=2026-07-20|link=https://discord.com/channels/1518634379604136178/1518692084729511967/1528787952367570955}}

On 2026-07-19 Far reported his 10 GB cards (10de:2082) working properly at 40 GB, with no PCIe Gen2 yet, and GMZombie007 had two 10 GB cards at 40 GB under HiveOS. On 2026-09-29 CUTE stated that all 16 RIR records on the 10 GB card are unused, so one can be spent to unlock the card, while on the 8 GB card 15 are burnt and the last one is "poisoned"; his explanation is that NVIDIA forgot to burn the RIRs on the 10 GB cards in manufacturing. Humvee55: nowhere else in Ampere is there a single instance of fully available RIRs, and the other A100 variants he checked have all RIRs trashed. Amogh confirmed it is real and stressed that an RIR record should be spent only to disable the software-override fuse, because records are one-time and limited; everything else is then changed through the resettable fuses. * {{Status|Proven}} '''The real split between the variants is RIR occupancy.''' The software-override gate is the same on both variants: the override-disable fuse is set on every card of a 15-card cohort that included both 170HX variants, with the same PCIe fuse fingerprint and no PCB difference. What differs is the RIR macro: the Hynix 8 GB card (10de:20c2) ships with it consumed (15 of 16 slots invalidated, one live record, none free), the Samsung 10 GB card (10de:2082) ships blank with 16 free slots. The burn tool refuses non-blank slots, so the gate-clear record has nowhere to go on an 8 GB card. Mark Linton's read-only dumps of two 8 GB cards (2026-10-10, no burns) and GitHub reports on further 8 GB cards show the same picture. Reported 10 GB

The 10 GB card is the CMP 170HX with PCI ID 10de:2082 and Samsung HBM2e. It has less memory than the 8 GB card after unlock, but its RIR fuse records are unused, which opens a path to most of a full GA100: up to 128 SMs, PCIe Gen3 and more. Plan on 40 GB of memory; 48 GB is a lottery. Not sure which card you have? See Which card do I have. New owner? Start with Start here#10gb.

Proven Memory vendor and bus. Every 10 GB card carries Samsung HBM and every 8 GB card SK Hynix: Mr Pec stated it and RazK confirmed it on 2026-07-19, and Luna, supasnipa360 and Arcanum repeated it the next day. Thanos counted four working stacks on the 8 GB card and five on the 10 GB card, which gives coolgod's 4096-bit and 5120-bit buses. Arcanum: the 10 GB card's HBM runs at about 1215 MHz against about 1458 MHz on the 8 GB card, so the fifth stack roughly evens out the bandwidth. Whether the Samsung stacks are HBM2 or HBM2e is a separate debate (Which card do I have#Memory vendor). Source: @mrpec, 2026-07-19

Reported What is public and what is still gated. Miséricorde's case for the 10 GB card: a fully unlockable GA100 with up to 128 SMs, PCIe 4.0 and NVLink, and 48 GB on some cards against 40 GB by default; 80 or 96 GB is not possible without Samsung internals. In the same thread mrpandagod ran 122 SMs with PCIe 3 patches and eXile's 10 GB card ran Gen2 x16 after the capacitor mod. The 48 GB, NVLink and PCIe 4.0 pieces are not in the public cmpunlocker release. Humvee55 first announced the extra SMs, the sixth stack and Gen3/4 on 2026-09-29 (see #Step 2: the RIR burn). Step 1: cmpunlocker (same as the 8 GB card)

With the cmpunlocker repo a 10 GB card gets 40 GB and a few extra SMs; unlocking the whole card takes real legwork. Source: @lycorascence, 2026-10-16 v0.5 gives +4 SMs and ECC on both variants. Source: @lia_oc, 2026-10-22 Driver 615.71.09 works with v0.5 on 10 GB cards. Source: @68x0, 2026-10-05

  • Proven 40 GB from the first release. On 2026-07-19 Far reported his 10 GB cards (10de:2082) working properly at 40 GB, with no PCIe Gen2 yet, and GMZombie007 had two 10 GB cards at 40 GB under HiveOS. Unlocking to 80 GB made the cards report 80 GB, but the memory was not fully addressable and benchmarks did not pass consistently. By 2026-07-21 the agreed state (Arcanum, Waypoint, Luna) was: 8 GB to 64 GB stable, 10 GB to 40 GB stable, 80 GB on the 10 GB card possible but unstable. meatsus and giaki3003 noted that the VRAM refresh-rate change from the original paper can be applied, but the result is not stable enough. • Proven How much of the 40 GB you can use. nvidia-smi shows 40960 MiB, but less of it is usable. On 2026-08-06 arabus reported both of his 10 GB cards unlocked "perfect" and running as 40 GB cards, and MrManny confirmed 10 GB to 40 GB as the stable unlock. cuddylac997 (2026-08-13): a model that goes over the cap of about 37 GB crashes one card and needs a restart; cmpunlocker2 avoids the restart. His keeper leaderboard for four 10 GB cards showed 33.0 GiB verified clean per card (2026-08-23), and his four-card server gives about 37.7 GiB usable per card (160 GB pooled). • Reported Gen2 fails when 8 GB cards share the box. orrorin's 10 GB card would not unlock to Gen2 while 8 GB cards were also installed, and at one point it sat at PCIe 1.0; unplugging the 8 GB cards and re-running the unlock fixed it. Step 2: the RIR burn

Warning This is permanent. It burns two of the card's 16 RIR fuse records and cannot be undone. Read RIR fuse burn first.

  • What it does: two RIR records, 0x0015 and 0x0095, clear the DISABLE_SW_OVERRIDE fuse (170hx-rir-tool writes them to RIR row 0 as the word 0x00950015); after that, SMs, PCIe speed and the sixth stack can be overridden in software. lxwx confirmed the record pair on a card on 2026-10-11. Source: @lxtend, 2026-10-11 In mrpandagod's words: a 2-record burn that allows the SM unlock, PCIe 3.0/4.0 and the sixth stack on some cards. Source: @djpandaman, 2026-10-12
  • Tool: 170hx-rir-tool (lxwx, MIT) burns the records and dumps the fuses; it needs iomem=relaxed and root. Source: repo github.com/lixiangwuxian/170hx-rir-tool by lixiangwuxian on GitHub, posted by @lxtend, 2026-10-10 It also needs the cmpunlocker-patched driver (or a 610+ driver) loaded. Source: @lycorascence, 2026-10-20 To unbind just the CMP without taking down other GPUs, write to that GPU's sysfs unbind path instead of unloading the driver. Source: @c133, 2026-10-18

Source: @_orrorin, 2026-10-20
  • Warning Getting the packing wrong wastes records or bricks the card. Targeting the wrong address has a good chance of bricking. Source: @djpandaman, 2026-10-05 An earlier attempt with a different encoding (0x15011401) changed nothing and wasted a row. Source: @lxtend, 2026-10-10
  • Do you need to burn at all? Contested In the order posted:
    • mrpandagod: going from 74 to 80 SMs needed no fuse override; 80 to 122 definitely did. Source: @djpandaman, 2026-10-10
    • OB88594: the 10G card only needs the software overlay and no writes to other RIRs. Source: @ob88594, 2026-10-26
    • Humvee55: a recipe plus software IFF was shared in #general; use that and do not waste RIR slots. Source: @scallion_9883, 2026-10-26 Earlier he posted his RIR and software-IFF notes (a 10 KB text file) for an owner who had burned the override fuse but could not finish the unlock; Feralzi fed them to his agent and reached 126 SMs. Source: @scallion_9883, 2026-10-16
      Source: @feralzi, 2026-10-17
      Source: @feralzi, 2026-10-17
  • Proven Why only the 10 GB card can take the burn. N2DCRYPT expanded RIR as "Redundant Information Row". Source: @_j3ns, 2026-09-29

  • Reported RIR read-out on both variants. Zarquon read the RIR records on 2026-09-28: on a 10 GB card all 16 records are blank, with nothing programmed; on an 8 GB card the record rows are invalidated except for one active factory record that sets a poison-disable fuse. Big Ptoughneigh warned that any write test must be safe for both the RIR and the main fuse array or it can brick the card. Source: @zarquon3157, 2026-09-28
    Source: @bigptoughneigh, 2026-09-29
  • Proven The real split between the variants is RIR occupancy. The software-override gate is the same on both variants: the override-disable fuse is set on every card of a 15-card cohort that included both 170HX variants, with the same PCIe fuse fingerprint and no PCB difference. • Reported Humvee55's announcement, 2026-09-29. NVIDIA apparently forgot to fill the 10 GB card's RIRs with junk as it did on other GA100 variants. Through the sw-iff route, SMs up to 126, the extra memory stack (up to 48 GB if that stack is not marked defective) and PCIe Gen3/4 all work: for compute the 10 GB card wins, for memory the 8 GB card (64 GB) stays king. reala concluded there is little hope for the same unlock on the 8 GB card if it depends on empty RIRs. Earlier, on 2026-09-08, Humvee55 had offered to buy 10 GB cards or trade 8 GB cards for them, saying he needed more SKUs to test on. Source: @scallion_9883, 2026-09-08

  • Reported Silicon lottery: defective versus disabled. Whether a card's inactive GPCs and stacks are marked defective or only disabled decides how far it goes. Waypoint's 10 GB card has one defective GPC, so it cannot reach 126 SMs; Lycorascence's card has its inactive GPCs and HBM stacks only disabled; GhostInTheDatacenter judged zero-defect cards to be rare. matstatman warned that not every card goes that high: "you might get 40gb or a brick". OB88594: 48 GB is probabilistic and only some cards reach it. From a small sample, mrpandagod reported on 2026-10-01 that 10 GB cards typically have 2 of 12 FBPs fused off and marked defective, while an 8 GB card he checked had 2 defective and 2 disabled; Lycorascence noted those two FBPs are marked disabled instead of defective on some 10 GB cards. • Gen3 how-to (summary of lxwx's guide). For the 10 GB card (10de:2082) on open kernel modules 615.71.09. Steps, in short:
    1. Burn the two RIR records with 170hx-rir-tool so the software-override gate opens (see Step 2 above).
    2. Build the driver with the guide's patch: a probe-time fuse override that clears the two Gen3-disable fuses, plus a Gen3 register sequence run after GSP boot.
    3. Load it with options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="RmForceEnableGen2=1;RMPcieLinkSpeed=0x5;CmpGen3=1" cmp_fuse_gen3=0.
    4. Train the link one step at a time, Gen1 to Gen2 to Gen3, with the guide's speed tool and script.
    5. Accept it only when lspci -vv shows LnkSta: Speed 8GT/s on both ends and a load test gives no Xid or AER errors.
    cmp-pcie-speed 2 drops back to Gen2 at runtime. One Gen3 transition took a card off the bus until a power cycle. Only 10de:2082 was validated. Full guide: Gen3_unlock_en.md. Source: repo github.com/lixiangwuxian/170hx_tips by lixiangwuxian on GitHub, posted by @lxtend, 2026-10-19

MaitOPS (2026-08-27): a 10 GB card is 250 W only. For a core offset, see the V/F curve item below. Source: @gmzombie, 2026-07-19

  • Reported Undervolt with the 8 GB card's V/F curve. Big Ptoughneigh suggested giving the 10 GB card the 8 GB card's voltage/frequency curve, which enables a core clock offset as on the 8 GB card. eXile tried it the same day (2026-10-03): decode was 5%, 6%, 8% and 11% faster than stock at 4K, 32K, 128K and 261K prompt lengths, with average power slightly lower (157 W against 162 W). Idle still does not drop much below 25 to 30 W. See Undervolting and power limits. Source: @exile_1ck, 2026-10-03

  • Reported 170tune on a 10 GB card in a Dell R740. Before 170tune's 10 GB fix, nvml_oc on Pasteyy.'s card reported the GPC and memory V/F offset range as [0 .. +0]. After the fix, clock locking worked only up to 1410 MHz (1300 MHz also worked), and he doubted the core offset was being applied. See 170tune and Dell PowerEdge R740. Source: @pasteyy., 2026-07-31
