Price history, July to October 2026

From CMP Wiki

Dated prices for the CMP 170HX as members posted them on the Discord, from the weeks before the unlock went public (early July 2026) to early October 2026. Each fact is one or a few members' quotes, listings, purchases or recollections, in the currency they used; conversions appear only where the poster gave one. A quote or an asking price is not a sale. The summary table and the later months are on Price history and market; how to buy and check a card is on Buying and Acceptance checklist.

Names and units as posted: Alifond, the Alibaba volume seller most posts mention, also appears as Ailfond, AiLFond and AILFond; this page writes Alifond. RMB, CNY and yuan are the same currency. "Recalled" marks a price someone remembered later; the Source date is the day it was posted.

Before the unlock

Before the unlock: about $100 to $300 a card

As mining cards the 170HX traded at about 100 to 300 USD (the club-170hx notes, relayed in lab notes) or 100 to 250 USD (@con3po7016). In bulk they went for less: @giaki3003 said on 2026-08-16 that people in this Discord had bought 300 cards at $125 each, about a 15x rise within a month; @.philow remembered single cards at $300 and @cmurrayis had last paid $250. @counterstrikeaimgod's group bought 16 at $200 each; @meatsus said the Chongqing Changjie store offered cards at $180 to $190 around 2026-07-20, and @moliminous saw that store scamming buyers when cards were about $100. @petrikrohn_26497 (2026-08-10): China held tens of thousands of these cards in warehouses, maybe 100,000, worth under $100 each in June 2026 and not selling at all. @cuddylac997 paid $200 each for four 10 GB cards before the unlock was known, and @bigfoot1144 bought 2 at $250 each right after the paper appeared, before the unlock was public. @machinezer0 called it a "$170 mining relic with virtually zero value" before the unlock, and @schakaqt, @scallion_9883, @ju5t5omedude and @theg9483 all recalled the $200 card, or the "e-waste", of a few months earlier.

Launch price in 2021: about $4,300 to $4,400 a card

@_j3ns gave the 170HX's 2021 retail price as $4,300 (2026-07-20). @meteorite777 bought 8 at launch for about $4,400 each, about $32k in total; solo-mining Ethereum until the Merge, the cards found 2 blocks and returned about $6k, and he was preparing to list them in July 2026. @kellertreppe123 recalls the cards at "4k at launch".

Day one of the public unlock: about $550 to $580, then $800 a day later

Buyers on the first day of the public release paid about $550 to $580, and within a day prices were about $800. Which day that was is itself disputed; see Unlock history: who found what, and when. @phoenixone7 bought 2x 8 GB at about 580 USD each on day 1 and saw 800 a day later Source: @phoenixone7, 2026-10-07; in an earlier account the price went from $560 to $800 by day 2 (in Brazil, with import tax) and his supplier took a week and a half to give a tracking number Source: @phoenixone7, 2026-09-17. @sojun80 bought 2 at about 580, 2 at 800 and 4 at 900 on eBay and kept only 2 after cancellations Source: @sojun80, 2026-10-07. The accounts of @gnasherrr's first order differ:

  • 2026-09-11: ordered 20 at $550 shipped, 16 cancelled, 4 arrived; and, in another post the same day, 20 ordered at $500 each, 16 cancelled Source: @gnasherrr, 2026-09-11
    Source: @gnasherrr, 2026-09-11.
  • 2026-10-14: ordered 16, 12 cancelled (the Newegg orders cancelled, eBay delivered), the first 4 at $550 each after passing on $700 units. He adds that the 10 GB card was priced higher at the time because the Reddit post claimed it could reach 80 GB Source: @gnasherrr, 2026-10-14.

Early buyers' prices recalled in September: sub-$500 orders cancelled, $900 within an hour

Recalled on 2026-09-11: @xtj7 says sub-$500 orders were cancelled before shipping and the price was $900 an hour later; the window below $900 after the unlock became known was very brief. @sojun80 had most orders cancelled but got one for $600 after threatening a bad review. Other entry prices: @djpandaman hesitated at $900 and bought above $1.4k; @neapopa went from $550 to about $900; @diabeetee had $950 orders cancelled and averaged about $1350 over 16 cards; @deejay9983 paid about $1200 each for 4 after selling 4x 3090; @friendsxxii paid about $800 each in July. Recalled on 2026-09-17: @con3po7016 bought about a week after the unlock, 5 cards for about $5600 in total plus 3 at $1000 each (about $1200 average over 8); @wakeupmbrc1 could have bought at $1000, thought it too late, and paid $1700 two weeks later; @xtj7 paid $2200. @tokukarin had an 8 GB card for 800, then bought two 10 GB cards at 1500 each when 8 GB cards were 2500.

Early to mid July: $250 to $600 a card

@bigfoot1144 and friends bought "a bunch" at $250 about 2 to 3 weeks before 2026-07-21, and @cute_sc2 also put the price at about $250 roughly three weeks before 07-25. Someone in @meatsus's country bought 5 at 100 EUR each about a month before 07-21, then listed them at 800 EUR and later as an "A100 equivalent" for 2000 EUR. @ju5t5omedude passed on 6 cards for $2500 shipped, Samuel Hayden passed on 6 at $600 each on Facebook on 2026-07-18, and @machinezer0 missed $600 to $800 on eBay and under $500 on Alibaba, against $170 buy-it-now listings from Alifond earlier. @decoy.works saw listings around $500 in Indonesia that sold before he acted. Orders placed around 07-17 to 07-19: @quark2world about $900 for 2 from Huateng, @cute_sc2 $480 per card, @meromgreen $490 from Alifond (not shipped) and @danske1 $420 (cancelled). @giaki3003 said the $400 Alibaba sellers would never have shipped, and a Goofish seller told @_arcanum_ he should have bought when quoted 3700 RMB (about $550).

Eleven cards at about $200 each, bought before the unlock

@petrikrohn_26497 said on 2026-08-27 that he bought eleven CMP 170HX cards for about $200 each, alongside a terabyte of DDR4 bought the year before to run DeepSeek R1 locally, so "you could run any large MoE model". By then cards cost $900 to $1500.

A mining YouTuber's stock: 45 to 48 cards at $150 each

@a.civardagezen said on 2026-07-19 that the YouTuber behind the "170hx AI Server Build" livestream bought 48 cards at $150 each, and on 2026-07-23 that a mining YouTuber bought 45 at $150 each about half a year earlier and later had 91 more. @gmzombie said he traded RTX 3070s to respec.io for the others, and that respec.io or PCSP sold these cards cheaply for a while; the miner chose them as the best card for non-core mining algorithms, then upgraded the rigs to rent to a private AI customer. @_arcanum_ recalled that the YouTuber posted a video just before the unlock went public regretting the trade, and @cute_sc2 said he was now selling all his stock except some show cards.

Mining-era prices: about $4,300 to $5,000 new in 2021, about $200 at the bottom

@smit1237 recalled that miners bought the cards new in 2021 at roughly $4500 to $5000; @_studebaker_ gave $4300 with minimum orders above 1000 pieces (2026-08-30), and @giaki3003 put CMPs at about $5k against about $15k for an A100 40GB at release. @wakeupmbrc1 (2026-09-16): the cards were profitable for Ethereum only about 2 months before proof of stake, sold for about $5k each (maybe $4.5k each in prebuilt rigs of 6 to 8 cards), and miners later dumped them at around $200 before the unlock. @smit1237 knows an owner of 100 8 GB cards bought at $350 each from China about 3 years earlier who refuses to sell even at $1k each and cannot sell locally at $2k. On 2026-07-28 @cute_sc2 expected prices to drop once Pearl mining becomes unprofitable; @giaki3003 said Pearl was already on life support and nobody wants these cards for it, unlike Ethereum, whose miners paid about $4k per card; @sekkit_75019 said Chinese miners want to dump all their cards, but at a high price.

Prices recalled for the release: about $250 before, $700 to $900 on repo day

Members recalled these on 2026-08-27. @zanooda said cards were about $250 when the first Twitter post claimed they could be unlocked; he thought it was a scam. @dufrelic bought 2 at 225 EUR each and did not dare buy more after the unlock paper was published. @quark2world bought at $450 "1 day before amogh dropped his repo", by which time the price had already doubled on exploit rumours. On day 1 of the repo release cards sold for $700 to $900; @artistosu bought 4 at $900. The thread does not give the release date.

The spike, 2026-07-19 to 07-24

Supplier prices exploded on Sunday 2026-07-19

@quark2world ordered on Friday 2026-07-17, "at the start of the craziness" but before the public unlock. @cute_sc2 paid Huateng for 16 cards at $480 each just before supplier prices "exploded on Sunday morning (gmt+2)", that is 2026-07-19. @vcore2191 saw the unlock posted on r/LocalLLaMA a couple of days before 2026-07-20, where commenters called it fake. @sojun80 says everyone who ordered over that weekend got the run-around from suppliers.

@cute_sc2 said on 2026-07-22 that the unlock "was clear before that too, but not widely known" and that Red Panda Mining made it popular; @quark2world linked a Red Panda Mining post on X. @_arcanum_ noted that cards had vanished from Taobao by Friday 2026-07-17, so Chinese sellers already knew, while the supplier-side @aifonder_66800 said they had heard the rumours but did not believe them. @quark2world called it "the 56gb hbm that was lost for 3years": the 8 GB card carries 64 GB.

@cute_sc2 reported Alibaba sellers out of stock and eBay listings pulled in Europe, and @ashtray9843 said Alibaba sellers were not responding. @petrikrohn_26497 tracked eBay listings: one had 99 of 100 available, sold 4 that day and was then delisted; another sold 19 in a day. @quark2world saw 588 EUR, about 150 EUR more than he had paid 1.5 to 2 days earlier, against about $3k for an A100 40GB and about $2k for an A100 Drive 32GB. @paulng0324 found 700 EUR with taxes and $500 quotes from sellers who never sent a link. @rubbra_f paid about $400 and @scrimbulous $304 on Facebook Marketplace before the exploit dropped.

On 2026-07-19 @meromgreen said cards were about $400 on Alibaba and expected $800; he had bought one a day earlier for $445 plus $40 shipping, and Alifond quoted him $445 plus $47 shipping to Korea. @jimtjames had a Huateng quote of about $450 each for 4 from a few days earlier. @skirtchaser believed only buyers who ordered below $300, before the news spread, would actually get cards. On 2026-07-20 @machinezer0 saw Alifond raise its price from $445 to $1308, and on 2026-07-21 @funzr reported Alibaba quoting $1200 before shipping and no offers at all in Europe.

The spike in #suppliers-chat: about $150 to $200 before the news, $1000 and more by 2026-07-20

Before the unlock went public cards sold for about $150 (@giaki3003); @robbbbbb7973 had ordered 10 at about US$180 a few days earlier and cancelled, and @attackerfx said 8 GB cards were $400 two days before 2026-07-20. @quark2world paid about $440 per card around 2026-07-17. By 2026-07-20 Alibaba quotes for the 8 GB card ran $500 to $900, eBay minimums were about $1000 to $1200 (@impactic, @ashtray9843), and some Alibaba listings appeared at $3k to $4k (@quark2world): the card had gone up 10x over the weekend, as @giaki3003 put it. Late on 2026-07-20 @giaki3003 saw a new Alibaba supplier back at $400, and predicted prices would fall back to about $150 within 2 months as miners rushed to sell.

Alibaba quotes on 2026-07-20 and 07-21: from $578 to $1620

By 2026-07-20 Alibaba suppliers that had been selling for a few hundred dollars quoted about $1600 (@a.civardagezen) and $1620 (@vcore2191). First replies were automated ("let me check with my boss for pricing"), one supplier answered "There is no stock about 170HX", and @impactic noted nothing on eBay had sold that high. On 07-21 Asicbiz Company Limited offered FOB $825 with a minimum order of 10 early in the day but later quoted $1620, while Shenzhen Ranshuo quoted $578 before VAT and shipping. Alifond dropped 200 EUR on a quote to @paulng0324, but @danske1 learned it was a broker for a mining farm that held the stock. A middleman told @_arcanum_ the spot price was $993 (listings $700 to $1100), and @chris.via.egnatia saw prices up 50% since the Chinese morning, to $1300 to $1500 for 4 cards. Huateng sent @decoy.works photos of stacked cards and quoted $1299 per unit for 6, and a supplier quoted @robbbbbb7973 $1149 for the 10 GB card.

US and eBay, 2026-07-20 to 07-22: $800 to $1500, and cancelled orders

On 2026-07-20 @scallion_9883 offered US-held stock at $800 for the 8 GB and $1k for the 10 GB card, and @barackorama posted a buy offer at $800 in the continental US through PayPal Goods and Services; eBay minimums were about $1000 to $1200. An eBay seller cancelled @eksitus's order for 4x 8 GB, and @barackorama's too. @quark2world noted that buyers outside the US pay import twice: $800 of goods became about $1040 delivered in Germany. A US-only eBay listing sold 3 cards at $1500 each (@simba6959, @impactic), and another seller ended his listing after selling 4 of 10 or more. On 07-21 @scallion_9883 said he had sold 15 on eBay plus 10 directly that day, at an average eBay price of about $1.2k for the 8 GB card; @quark2world's chart showed 19 eBay sales that day, small against the listed supply, and @giaki3003 noted that eBay at about $1.2k was already below most Chinese supplier quotes.

The spike in #off-topic: about $200 to $250 before, $700 to $1850 after

@counterstrikeaimgod said cards once sold for about $200, and @meatsus paid $1500 for 6 cards (about $250 each) through Huateng; @danske1 said $400 offers were being refused. On 2026-07-20 @_j3ns posted that prices were "dangerously close" to A100 40GB pricing, noting that the 8 GB CMP still has more memory than an A100 40GB. The same day @c.03937 ordered two at about $700 each, @skirtchaser saw prices up $1200 to $1500 per card, and @petrikrohn_26497 reported a $1850 listing and a seller who sold seven at $1,200 each. On 2026-07-21 @nekopavel paid $990 locally including shipping and insurance, @diabeetee paid $835 per card plus $450 shipping for 7 on AliExpress, and @a.civardagezen saw 657 EUR plus 114 EUR shipping and about 900 plus 250 shipping.

July: about $900 to $1,350 as the unlock spread

On 2026-07-20 @impactic bought at $900 expecting prices to rise, @attackerfx reported 45 cards in his country at about $1000 after the news (a 3090 price), and @lunaroseoc predicted a wave of cards like the earlier V100 wave; on 2026-07-22 @skyy2333 found a few 8 GB cards at about $900, below eBay. @eksitus (2026-07-24) averaged about $1000 per card after taxes and shipping, buying only from US sellers after an eBay order from China was cancelled, and recorded unboxing and testing in case a seller disputed a broken card. @diabeetee was promised $750 each by a server member who then stopped answering, bought at over $1k, and saw that seller relist at $1350 the next day; @deejay9983 bought one 8 GB card at "scalp price". @1a2b3c0967 (2026-07-27) bought about 20 cards on eBay amid seller cancellations and expected the cards to dry up within weeks once miners finished dumping them; @_studebaker_ (2026-07-28) expected the average price to dip below $1000.

Alibaba quotes on 2026-07-22: $835 to $1128, on DAP terms

On 2026-07-22 one of the original suppliers offered @robbbbbb7973 $1000 each, and @giaki3003 got $835 (later stated as 890) and $1000 from two listings, though he was unsure either would ship. @meromgreen's seller, after cancelling his earlier cheap order, offered $1128 including shipping as a "discount", on DAP terms (not DDP); @cute_sc2 estimated $1.3k to $1.5k after duties and taxes. A freight forwarder refused to ship for @giaki3003 because the card was "too expensive", and @paulng0324's supplier had only the expensive stock left.

eBay on 2026-07-22 and 07-23: a $290 sell-off, $4k outliers, the floor near $1k

@quark2world reported that a US eBay seller who had missed the unlock news sold the whole stock at about $290 per card on 2026-07-22. @giaki3003 said the eBay floor had dropped below Alibaba prices by late 07-22, and on 07-23 posted "Floor down to 1k". Outliers: one eBay listing at about $4k (@aneinander), one card in France at 2.5k and one in Italy at 1.5k. @giaki3003 pointed to a server post with many listings and said the floor would not rise until those sold.

Timeline posted on 2026-07-22 and 07-23: $300, $450, $750, cancellations, then $1000 to $1200

@benjamin_4618 summed up the run as $300, then $750, then cancelled orders, then $1200. @quark2world paid about $450 per card around 2026-07-17, close to 1k EUR for two after import costs, and the supplier-side @aifonder_66800 put the China price above $900 on 07-22. On 07-23 several Alibaba suppliers asked about $1000 (@robbbbbb7973, @.zackmorris). @deejay9983 said US buyers must add about 30% in tariffs plus shipping, which makes eBay cheaper, and @rubbra_f offered cards at $1.05k excluding shipping, without an invoice.

22 to 24 July: 1900 EUR offers in Europe, about $1200 on US eBay, $1350 from a member

@thisisashitsystem found Chinese marketplaces selling only in bulk or at inflated single-card prices. On 2026-07-23 @nemz38_is_my_waifu_91412 was offered an 8 GB 170HX for 1900 EUR in Europe, against 1500 EUR for a 32GB 4080 Super, and worked out that import fees and VAT would bring a US card to about 1800 EUR; his earlier orders at around $500 had all been cancelled. @roger_dammit put US eBay at about $1200 for the 10 GB card and $100 to $200 more for the 8 GB card. On 2026-07-24 Plean bought two cards from a Discord member at $1350 each. @profdd suggested the PG199 32G (SXM) as an alternative if cheap, and @quark2world expected crypto resellers to dump cards within months.

Price points around the public unlock (late July): $150 to $1299

Posted prices: about $150 per card in early 2026 (a miner's bulk buy), about $250 paid by @quark2world, and about $200 for a broken card (@dalzyyy). On 2026-07-24 @quark2world said the card is great for AI students at $500 to $600 but not worth $1500, given a possible $2k loss if something is wrong; @diabeetee countered that for a single card it is the best price per GB above 32 GB. On 2026-07-27 @shudza ordered one 170HX 8GB on Alibaba from a Chinese supplier for $1299. @gechangwei, in China, offered to sell for $1000 and asked how to ship abroad, and @bagstah offered cards from Canada; @_arcanum_ pointed sellers to the sales channel.

The August climb

Around 2026-08-01: Alibaba from $859, 950 EUR in Germany, about $600 needed to beat it

@petrikrohn_26497 found an Alibaba seller claiming 1 million in stock (an 8 GB listing) and another at $859 for 1 to 199 units; @rrickk420 noted that seller had only 4 reviews, and @cute_sc2 called it a newcomer or a scam. @cute_sc2: flu663 sells in Germany for 950 EUR, so Alibaba would need about $600 a card to match after shipping, VAT and the risk of a dead card; @sealclubber put shipping at about 30 EUR and the total at about 800 EUR. @rrickk420 had earlier paid 850 for 2 from an eBay seller before the price explosion, and @meromgreen said the cards were already expensive.

Recalled in #off-topic: about $200 in mid-July, about $1.5K by late August

On 2026-08-04 @meatsus said cards had sold for $200 or less two weeks earlier, and on 2026-08-07 @zapirate described the card as "widely available for $200". On 2026-08-12 @kellertreppe123 was making 750 EUR offers to Alibaba sellers every day and @artistosu cited 1199; @kellertreppe123 would rather pay 900 EUR to an EU seller, and @giaki3003 pointed to a seller on Tradera at about 900 EUR. By 2026-08-22 @lunaroseoc and @icematty put the price at about $1.5K, with Alifond selling x16-cap-modded cards at $1699, and on 2026-08-23 @rrickk420 still called it the cheapest HBM card at $1.5K to $2K.

2026-08-03: Alibaba $800 to $900, Alifond and Huateng about $1000, eBay $1150

On 2026-08-03 Alibaba sellers quoted roughly $800 to $900 per card: @giaki3003 saw $800, @cute_sc2 got $890 for 16 units, @moliminous's lowest was $815, and a seller with a 20-year account came down to $899. Alifond and Huateng still asked around $1000, and eBay had 3 listings at $1150. @machinezer0 set his limit at $800 all-in for a clean, working, confirmed-unlockable 8 GB card. @moliminous said prices fell $200 to $300 in three days and predicted a settle near $650 within a month or two; @artistosu thought $800 to $850 fair.

Snapshot 2026-08-03 to 08-05: $557 to $1200, Xianyu about 5,000 yuan

@lubakmanqk posted a "price is dropping" screenshot on 2026-08-03, and @adih1266 replied "835 for brick". @a.civardagezen hoped prices would settle around $800 or lower; new 5060 Ti cards cost $600 to $650 where he lives. @phoenixone7's AliExpress seller was at $557 per card when he ordered, then about $1100 ($1010 with a $90 coupon), while others listed at $1800 to $2000. @justbendev, in China, saw Xianyu at about 5,000 yuan, with scam listings at 1,800 to 2,400 yuan. @tugoubxs thought Xianyu prices had dropped a little, but @fallengod9962 said prices went up that week; @deejay9983 paid about $1200 per card and @fallengod9962 $1k each.

2026-08-04 to 08-07: an $800 floor, a slow bleed, buyers' targets

On 2026-08-04 @cute_sc2 saw an $800 minimum and @giaki3003 said prices had stabilised; @programmerboi was negotiating $675 on Alibaba against $1300 on eBay, and @machinezer0 bought 4x 8 GB on eBay at $1000 each (about the $800 Alibaba DDP equivalent). On 08-05 @skirtchaser got an unsolicited $850 offer, @68x0 was quoted $942 shipped to Canada, @deejay9983 had paid up to $1400 on eBay, and @beefbonecapone named Shenzhen Creative Technology as a sub-$900 Alibaba supplier; @meatsus advised waiting 2 weeks because sellers have deep stock. @giaki3003 planned to buy at $300 in a few months, and @quark2world said cards should return to $400, or $600 for barely used ones. On 08-07 @_studebaker_ saw US eBay listings at $450, and @sealclubber said the hype was gone, prices were slowly bleeding and suppliers were sandbagging.

August: Alibaba about $800 to $880, eBay from $1,300 rising to $1,800

@auxiliary_baka (2026-08-04): by the time he learned the cards unlock, they cost several of his monthly wages. @cmdrwaka324 (2026-08-09) could not find any card under $1300 on eBay; @zingy90210 (in Australia) hoped for the pre-spike price of about $750 but saw $1000 on 2026-08-10, and @artistosu blamed YouTubers and news coverage and would buy only at $500. @petrikrohn_26497: Alibaba lists the 170HX at $800, which matches about $1250 in the US after tariffs and taxes; Alibaba takes about 8% in fees, eBay about twice that. @noskillonlyswag: verified Alibaba sellers now sell only in bulk, offline, at $880 or more per unit; @danske1 received two Alibaba orders at under $1k each. On 2026-08-13 @ashtray9843 quoted $900 to $1.2k per card, and on 08-15 @sealclubber called 1k absurd given the volume while @danske1 noted that a few holders can easily limit supply. Then prices rose: @.philow was quoted 1.6k by an Alibaba seller (08-18), @spale777 balked at spending another 6k to 7k EUR (08-19), @stcord said prices went x1.5 and @artistosu "850 to 1700" (08-23), @_datacat_ noted a $1,699 price (08-24), @vektor_prime saw eBay sales over $1.8k and sometimes still $1.5k (08-25), and @ianszo21 saw prices rising almost daily (08-26).

Recalled on 2026-08-05: about $200 in early July, $1000 to $1200 by early August

@fallengod9962 said the cards went for $200 a month earlier, when a whole 12-card server was about $4k, and that old miners were now trying to recoup their money. He had paid $1k each (one card, then two more from a different Alibaba vendor) and said prices had already risen that week. @deejay9983 paid $1200 each and still called 3 cards the cheapest way to run DeepSeek V4 Flash locally; he slowed public testing to avoid creating hype before reaching his goal of 10 cards (he had 4).

wccftech coverage (2026-08-07), Xianyu at 5,000 to 6,000 RMB, about $1,000 resale

On 2026-08-07 wccftech reported CMP 170HX prices "exploding" from about $100 to over $1,000 as the unlock tool spread (@cute_sc2). Its story linked the 80 GB branch rather than main; @_j3ns clarified that he had only pulled master into that branch and re-added the constants, so it was not a working 80 GB unlock. @phoenixone7 said prices had risen a few days after the unlock was released, helped by a YouTuber in the server who let it slip early. On Xianyu the price dropped to about 5,000 RMB (@dalzyyy had hoped for under 4k), then rose to nearly 6,000 RMB that day (@aaasss1456); @replacedriver47 would buy more at 650 EUR each, @a.civardagezen estimated a 5,000 RMB card at about 800 EUR landed, and @_____josh_____ warned of a "50% chance of getting brick" on Xianyu. Western resale sat around $1,000 to $1,100 (@segmond asked whether $1,000 is the ceiling), while @artistosu would pay only $300.

On 08-08 quotes were around $1000, and @ju5t5omedude warned that $1k easily becomes $1300 with shipping and tariffs. On 08-09 @bentbean_50370's vendor went from $899 a week earlier to a $990 minimum. On 08-10 quotes were about $1000 (@danske1 saw $1k plus $150 for a cap mod), $1199 with the cap mod from another seller, Shenzhen Ranshuo 800 EUR plus 25 EUR shipping without VAT (@kellertreppe123), $960, $845 (Shenzhen Creative), $780 (@_studebaker_) and $1200 from Alifond ($1100 each for 4 or more). On 08-12 one seller cut its price by $10 and @machinezer0 cited about $1300; on 08-13 Alifond raised to $1299. Around 2026-08-09: $300 to $1,200 and up

@dalzyyy bought one card for $300 by gambling on a broken card, and two more he bought at $400 each were redirected by the Chinese sellers. Aeiou said a replacement now costs $1,200 or more, and that he could have had one or two for $500 had he ordered a day earlier. @mfj4 saw the 170HX at roughly the price of a 3090, and @robbbbbb7973 at about twice that. @dalzyyy's math: a $300 card over 5 years at $0.10/kWh costs about the same as API pricing. A visit to a Chinese mining farm: holders stop selling, $900 to $1100 in four days

@ferraripower4121 visited a crypto mining site in rural China on 2026-08-15. One holder had about 1500 cards and phoned other holders in front of him; none would sell, because they hold speculatively and are still mining. They had earlier sold 2000 or more cards at $200 to $500 and regretted it, and saying you are buying for AI makes them stop selling. He bought 16 at $1100 each: four days earlier the price was $900, it rose $150 in one day, and he refused a requested $10k deposit. @petrikrohn_26497 noted that the cards have value only because developers got cheap cards (over 2000 in the community), and that long-term value depends on software support.

@cmurrayis, after talking to more than 30 Alibaba vendors (most of them scammers, he said), listed quotes for one card: Alifond $1499 (including the capacitor mod), Chongqing Yuqian Trading Co $1260, Shenzhen Ranshuo Technology Co $940 and Asicbiz Company Limited $1280; he had not contacted Shenzhen Enbay Trade Co. Ltd. Alifond quoted @giaki3003 $1299 at the same time, implying about $200 for the cap mod. @.philow reported Shenzhen Ranshuo rising to $1400 within hours.

2026-08-17 and 08-18: Alibaba quotes jump from about $900 to $1300 and $1700

On 2026-08-17 @adusts reported that Alifond had raised prices again; @zingy90210 was quoted $1599 and @.philow $1.7k, and @kellertreppe123 said sellers were adding $100 every 4 hours, while Xianyu was around $900 to $1100. @fallengod9962's seller, who had sold him 2 cards 3 weeks earlier at $900, now asked $1300, and @matstatman put used cards on Alibaba at $1350. @icych had bought several cards a week earlier at $900 each from the site behind a $1400 listing that @lrdimm posted, and said miners sometimes sell whole rigs cheaply, though he had to clean cement off his.

Tom's Hardware coverage (2026-08-18) quoted $250; real prices were about $1.6k

On 2026-08-18 Tom's Hardware published an article on the software mod that "unlocks 64GB of VRAM on $250 CMP 170HX". Members said the $250 figure was wrong at publication: @.philow put the real price at about $1.6k, @roger_dammit saw eBay sales north of $1600 and expected prices to climb, and @giaki3003 said cards had sold for $2k on eBay about three weeks earlier after a "massive pump". @giaki3003 and @.philow did not expect the article to move prices much because the setup is hard (Linux only). The coverage itself is listed on Press and coverage.

Tom's Hardware and the surge of 2026-08-20 and 08-21

On 2026-08-19 @artistosu shared the Tom's Hardware article. @dalzyyy said it was about a month late: when he had posted about the card on r/LocalLLaMA a month earlier, cards already cost about $500. @bayley_w attributed the price surge of 2026-08-20 and 08-21 to the article, and @schakaqt described the usual pattern: tech media pick up a discovery or new software support for old hardware, and prices explode. @djpandaman thought prices were still below market value given how little mainstream coverage there had been. Later @stcord blamed rising prices on "the lemmings watching the YouTube vids and reading the tomshardware gospel"; @sojun80 said YouTube had largely ignored the cards so far, and @quark2world said coverage had peaked and more benchmarks would not move prices.

2026-08-18 to 08-20: China quotes $1199 to $1599, Xianyu over $1200

@artistosu bought 4 cards at $900 each; his lowest quote had been $800 from Shenzhen Creative Technology, other Alibaba sellers now wanted $1499 to $1599, and Xianyu listings were 7000 to 8000 yuan. @voidgiraffe had a $1199 quote five days earlier that became $1599, and bought at $1150 from a seller who then asked $1600 and said "we sold all our cheap stock". @moliminous saw Alifond go from $980 to over $1500 in a day (08-19), and @.philow saw a lower price offered only for orders of 100 units or more. @bentbean_50370 reported Alibaba falling back from about $1599 to $1299 on 08-19, and on 08-20 @_arcanum_ said most Xianyu (Goofish) sellers wanted over $1200 for a base card.

eBay US on 2026-08-18 and 08-19: $1.5k to $1.7k; about $1000 now a good deal

@vektor_prime saw eBay listings above $1.5k with the latest sale at $1.7k, and @irythros put the going rate at about $1400 to $1700. @adusts said Alibaba ends up above $1.5k after tariffs and shipping and eBay is $1.7k or more. @bayley_w had paid about $1000 each when buying 10, Russian sellers on Avito were at about $1300, and @voidgiraffe had a local offer of $1300 for a card without the capacitor mod. @skirtchaser said about $1000 now counted as a good deal, up from $800 to $850 a few weeks earlier, because sellers stopped dumping cards once the unlock gave them use value.

Daily price polling of Chinese sellers, and the $800 to $1500 swings

For about a month members had messaged Chinese sales agents daily for quotes; the running joke is replying "dear" with a rose. On 2026-08-20 @artistosu posted seller screenshots showing the price dropping. @giaki3003 said his daily quote went from $800 to $1500 and back to $800, and was $1400 that day, while @_studebaker_ said cards sold for over $2k in the US. @_studebaker_ argued that the daily inquiries inflate the sellers' sense of demand; @giaki3003 disagreed, saying they set prices from actual sales. @quark2world observed that EU prices rise just as prices fall elsewhere.

US eBay around 2026-08-20: $1800 to $2200 sales, tariffs, low volume

@adusts saw one card sell on eBay for $1800 on the night of 2026-08-19, and a single 170HX with the PCIe mod was listed at 3500 EUR (@schakaqt). @quark2world's eBay sold-listing screenshots showed low volume, about half of it parts such as shrouds, which he put at roughly 3k cards a year. Stormlrd's eBay listing sold for close to $2200 all in, and @bayley_w put untested US cards at about $1800 before tax; stormlrd blamed US tariffs for US prices being higher than elsewhere. @djpandaman asked whether eBay auctions can be manipulated, after a listing he never saw closed with a single bidder.

Up about 800 in one week (2026-08-21)

On 2026-08-21 @armand0e posted a listing chart showing CMP 170HX prices up by about 800 (currency not stated) in one week. @_arcanum_ said prices shot up over the weekend and guessed that Qwen 3.8 27B drove demand. @asylumexp had paid 900 on Alibaba a week earlier and received the card on 2026-08-20. @schakaqt expected prices to settle around RTX 3090 and A100 40 GB levels, and @armand0e and @schakaqt said a fuller VBIOS unlock (ECC, PCIe 4.0, x16 through the capacitor mod) would push them to or above A100 40 GB. @licensedterrapin called prices "in the stratosphere" and considered a V100 32 GB instead, and @prefix10k called it a "$1000 GPU" on 2026-08-22.

@cmurrayis was quoted $850 two weeks before 2026-08-22, $1100 one week before, and $1500 on 08-22. @deejay9983 paid $950 shipped about a week earlier, and the same supplier then asked $1500 each for more; his first 4 cards came from eBay at $1150 to $1400 each. @voidgiraffe paid $1199 and was then asked $1599 to $1600 including shipping and customs. The supplier "neiro" offered @djpandaman $1280 per unit on 08-20. Alifond asked $1650, and an Arca Live user paid $1694. The late-August spike and "the card lottery"

@zingy90210 (2026-08-22): CMP pricing was good until that week, when Alibaba vendors raised prices to where they may no longer be worth it. @segmond had planned 16 cards, ran out of money, and then prices "went to the moon"; everything 170HX is as-is, with no warranty and no refunds. Quality data points: @civiloid got 4 cards, all passing memory stress tests, and @spale777 had 2 (1 bad, 1 good) with 4 more coming. @meromgreen said Alibaba sellers source from miners, and @schakaqt expects most cards have changed hands about 5 times. Street price timeline posted around 2026-08-22 to 08-24: from $400 in July to $1500 to $2100

Alibaba quotes of $400 to $600 were seen on 2026-07-19 and 07-20, though many of those sellers would likely not have shipped; prices then settled near $800 before VAT and shipping until articles about the unlock reached mainstream sites (@a.civardagezen, @dalzyyy). About a month before 08-24 a UK classifieds seller sold 2 cards for 300 GBP. Around 08-13 cards were about $900; by 08-22 and 08-23 Alibaba asked $1500 to $1600 (@deejay9983), and @cmurrayis, who paid $1200 per card, saw $1500 to $2100 a week later. eBay sold prices ran $1200 to $2299 over a few days (@danske1, 08-23). Late August in #hardware: $1,599 at the top, Alifond at $2,099, a $500 lot cancelled overnight

Late August to 2026-09-01: about $1000, then $2999 asks that did not sell, then $2299

@aflyingsquirrel (2026-08-29): cards were about $1000 when he last checked. @smit1237 (08-30) could not see why people pay even $1500. @vektor_prime (08-30) could not find 2 more under $2k on eBay and worked out about $31 per GB of VRAM for the 64 GB card against about $39 per GB for an M5 Ultra. @roger_dammit recalled people here saying it would peak at $1k, and @stcord noted an insane return for anyone who bought at $200. @beefbonecapone (08-31) offered x16-modded cards hand-delivered for $2500, and @wakeupmbrc1 found no cheap cards anywhere, even 10 GB ones. @alanoo (2026-09-01): cards had not sold at $2999 over the previous days, and shops now listed $2299.

Late August to mid-September: doubling to about $2,200, then talk of $3k after the LTT video

On 2026-08-30 @stcord said the card had doubled to $2199; @matstatman costed 6 cards at $2300 each (13.8k), and @con3po7016 (09-01) said the price jumped from about $1000 to $2200 in a week. In Europe @humandrone8721_60165 saw one at 2800 EUR in Germany, and @reala7096 an Italian eBay seller at 2400 EUR whom members viewed with suspicion. @impactic (09-02) claimed eBay fees drop from 11 to 12% to 3% for sales above about $7,500 (unverified). After the Linus Tech Tips video of 2026-09-12 @diabeetee asked whether it was 3k per card now; @derick2k refused to pay $2k to $3k, and @squishysquare balked at 7,500 for three 10 GB cards. On 2026-09-17 @voidgiraffe put asking prices at about $2.2k, double what he paid for his first 4; @xtj7 said $2,700, @ins_mniac used $2,500, @danske1 noted that people had said prices would not rise further since the $700 mark, and @spectakkular said one RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell costs about the same as 6 CMPs, in a market dominated by Chinese supply plus demand from the LTT video (about a million views).

Late August to early September in #development-general: 900 EUR paid, 2.6k to 2.7k on eBay, $56 and $39 per GB

@wakeupmbrc1 paid about 1.6k per card; on 2026-08-31 eBay was at about 2.6k to 2.7k, and @dino_38975 had paid 1k less a week earlier. @cute_sc2 paid 900 EUR and says the card is not worth 2k; @con3po7016 put fair value at $1500 to $1700 (the same as a used DGX Spark). @bagstah listed cards at 2900 CAD, shipping to Canada only, and @zagitta's Chinese seller quoted $2700. @dalzyyy: a 32 GB card at 5000 RMB would be OK. @vektor_prime's comparisons: a modded RTX 4080 32GB at about 1.7k to 1.8k (about $56 per GB) and the M5 Ultra at about $39 per GB, which he sees as the ceiling prices settle toward.

2026-08-31 and 09-01: about $2200 to $2500; Goofish over 10k RMB; Australia at 3347 AUD

On 2026-08-31 @segmond put the going price at $2500 per card, and @rrickk420 posted a screenshot captioned that the CMP was heading to 6k. @zingy90210 said cards had been 1800 to 2000 AUD and were now about 3347 AUD; he had bought 4 at about 1800 AUD each roughly 1.5 weeks before 2026-09-01. @voidgiraffe argued that 2k to 3k is the likely ceiling because 40 GB A100s cost about $4k, unless PCIe 4.0 gets unlocked. On 09-01 @thisisashitsystem reported prices over 10,000 RMB on Goofish (Xianyu); @deejay9983 said the cheapest eBay listing he could find was $2200 each, @rrickk420 posted one at $2189, and @deejay9983 set his own ceiling at $1600 per card.

On 2026-08-31 @kellertreppe123 put a CMP at about 3k (then 2.5k, probably EUR) against about 500 EUR for an MI50. @wakeupmbrc1 said 2.5k is much more painful than the earlier 1.5k once multiplied by 4 cards, and @segmond mentioned "the recent rise of 170hx price". On 2026-09-01 @bayley_w said there seems to be no supply of 170HX, and @licensedterrapin said the "170HX ship has sailed"; his claim that Vietnamese 170HX would be sold soon and prices would drop came with a "you have to totally trust me" gif, so treat it as a joke.

Mid-September: $2.4k to $2.5k and up, cap-modded tested cards sell within hours, 10 GB up to $1800

As of 2026-09-16: @popop4151 said few places sell besides eBay, at $2.5k and up, and @wakeupmbrc1 put 8 GB cards at $2400 and up and could sell his locally at $2100 instantly (a 5090 buyout was $5700). @c133: even the 10 GB card was up to $1800. @smit1237: his local market has many CMPs at about $2k that nobody buys. @apoloniato_07709: the 8 GB card is $1,863.89 inside China (foreigners pay more for shipping and refund risk). @cibernox: a modded, tested card listed on eBay under $2400 sells within hours, especially a cap-modded one. @djpandaman: China's supply is thin and much of it is now in Western countries; @quark2world thinks supply is being withheld, and @wakeupmbrc1 expects 8 GB cards to pass $3k if a PCIe fuse-burn unlock is released.

Cards bought at about $200 now resell for about 10x (2026-09-16)

On 2026-09-16 @meatsus remarked that 170HXs bought for about $200 could now be sold for about 10 times that, and that the card is trendy, which explains content creators suddenly covering it. @licensedterrapin noted many articles about the BC-250 again and read it as a sign of a real GPU shortage.

2026-09-17 to 09-21: 2000 EUR private, $2900 fully modded on eBay, $2k local

@dany0_ (Czechia) was offered a 64 GB-unlocked card for about 2000 EUR shipped by a private seller, and noted that cards had sold for about 200 EUR four months earlier. @pcchip saw about $2900 on eBay for cards fully modded with PCIe x16 and a blower fan. @lenxtroz paid about $2.7k, @n3bs bought one locally for $2k (the unlock worked first try), and @dalzyyy said Taobao blocked him from buying 2 when they were $400. @jjb01957 says eBay prices softened slightly in the week before 2026-09-19 and that cheaper cards are likely defective or scams; @sojun80 said sellers exist but will not be cheap.

Mid to late September peak: $2,300 to $2,700, and 2.5k EUR

On 2026-09-18 @wakeupmbrc1 said $2,300 on eBay disappears instantly; @tokukarin paid $1,600 for a second order plus 80 EUR tax on arrival, which @wakeupmbrc1 called a month-old price; @rrickk420 said most members bought at $800 to $1,500, and @quark2world paid 1k EUR for his two. @matstatman advised that even at $3k you might get a returned brick; @voidgiraffe posted a screenshot from a supplier he considers reliable, and @stcord commented "China buying them all up". In the week of 2026-09-22 @zingy90210 said cards were flipping at $2300 and up, and @voidgiraffe would not pay the $2,500 to $3,000 some people talked about. On 2026-09-23 @ins_mniac said known-broken cards had sold for $1,900 each the week before; on 09-24 @humandrone8721_60165 was offered 2 cards at 2.5k EUR each, tested and delivered, and @n3bs saw prices rise $500 in a week. On 2026-09-27 @wakeupmbrc1 offered two 8 GB cards from Kazakhstan at $2.5k each, then $2.7k each with shipping paid; @licensedterrapin regretted passing on one at $1,460 shipped; @_youngchap (09-29) could not find any card under $2.5k to $3k, @zingy90210's Alibaba contact quoted $2,299 that morning, and @nikhilr1696 had bought 2 at $1,200 each earlier.

Late September in #off-topic: 170HX around $2,400; 32 GB-only cards at about 900 EUR

@cibernox noted that r/LocalLLaMA calls spending 2k on a CMP 170HX a silicon lottery (2026-09-21). @darcidride paid about 900 EUR per card for his two 32 GB-only cards; @lia_oc said that is acceptable given that the R9700, B70 and B65 cost more, but rough above $1000, and had heard of someone paying 2k or more for a 32 GB card. On 2026-09-30 @d3m3n7r said 170HX cards cost around $2,400 when he found out about them, against $70 for his 90HX. The 32 GB-only boards are described on 32 GB cards (subsystem 10de:1586).

Late September, China and the US: 14k to 15k yuan unmoved by rumours; 10 GB about $2K; one $1000 eBay sale

@spectakkular: cards were $300 each, then went to $600 to $1000; @cute_sc2: about $500 right before jumping to about $1k. @karya4389 last saw 8 GB cards at 950 to 1100 EUR and found a local $2300 offer. Early October 2026: Alifond about $2300 (about $2469 DDP), eBay about $3k for cap-modded cards, China CNY 12,300 wholesale to CNY 13,500 tested, and the 10 GB card at 3800 to 4500 in China (@djpandaman). @con3po7016 suspects that @voidgiraffe's recipe added $100 or more to prices.

China dealer prices for the 8 GB card in October: CNY 13,000 at the start, 17,000 to 19,000 by mid-month

@ob88594 (2026-10-01): in China they are all dealers offering stress testing and unlocking; the average 8G price is around CNY 13,000 and wholesale about CNY 12,300. A cleaned card with the coupling capacitors replenished and a 3-day test costs about CNY 13,500; there are no untested cards on the market, only broken ones are noticeably cheaper, and 10G pricing is chaotic. @matstatman noted it was a Chinese holiday period (wait two weeks). On 10-12 @wakeupmbrc1 quoted the 8 GB buyout at 13k RMB (about $2k), later admitting the figure was stale; on 10-13 @tony_smartecom wrote "Don't see 13k rmb anymore. Europe and other regions

Germany and EU eBay in late August: 300 EUR lows were earlier, 2500 to 2800 EUR asks, a 10 GB card at 1450 EUR

On 2026-08-29 @humandrone8721_60165 posted German eBay screenshots showing listings from 3000 to 7000 EUR and sold prices rising day by day. He said the EU never had the US $200 sales: about 300 EUR was the EU low, apart from one defective card in Iceland at 165 EUR, and he put the EU price at 2800 EUR for anyone who does not want to deal with customs and China. @quark2world posted ebay.de statistics for the last 30 days, and @danske1 stressed the difference between listed and actually sold prices. On 2026-08-30 @humandrone8721_60165 found only one card available in Germany on Kleinanzeigen, at 2800 EUR; on 08-31 he saw two 8 GB cards at 2800 EUR and one at 2500 EUR, plus a 10 GB card offered clean with a power adapter at 1450 EUR, which @irythros called a good deal, so good it might be a scam.

EU in September: few cards, 2400 to 3000 EUR asks, 2000 EUR landed seen as a good price

@quark2world said on 2026-09-08 that a 2400 EUR eBay card ends up at about 2900 EUR once it arrives, while used 3090s cost about 1200 EUR from a vendor with a 1-year warranty, plus about 250 EUR for an NVLink bridge. @humandrone8721_60165 said EU prices were 3K EUR or more, that an 1800 EUR order of his had been cancelled, and that "not even the scammers are replying anymore". @matej87 saw cards from European sellers on eBay at about 2000 EUR that were not selling. On 2026-09-10 @colo2442 called 2000 EUR landed (including VAT and import tax) a good EU price, with every offer he found a few hundred above that, and @matstatman agreed. @djpandaman had assumed many cards ended up in Russia and Kazakhstan, which should have helped EU supply, but that had not shown up in prices.

eBay asks of 4000 to 4500 EUR against thin sales volume (2026-09-10)

@quark2world found eBay listings at 4500 EUR (with an AI-written description) and 4000 EUR. On eBay Germany only Chinese sellers had sold cards, 4 of them in the last 90 days. He estimated fewer than 1000 cards sold in total on eBay over 90 days, so a seller would need 3 years or more to move 3000 cards at that rate. @rrickk420 thought $4k to $5k was fair value for US businesses.

Europe, Germany and the UK in September: EU demand "basically killed"

@humandrone8721_60165 (2026-09-12): no more CMP 170HX on Kleinanzeigen, not even scammers; he thinks 4K EUR sellers target owners of x4 or x8 production rigs with no spare card, where one dead card cripples the system. @quark2world linked a Kleinanzeigen listing that nobody bought, whose seller had no stock according to @humandrone8721_60165. @quark2world (2026-09-14): CMPs are pointless to look for in the EU, since the Chinese 2.3k offers end up at about 3k after customs and taxes; @a.civardagezen (09-15) noted that the server had no sellers at all. On 2026-09-20 @quark2world said the cheapest offer a person in Europe could find was under 2,000 EUR, that one listing had been static for 12 days with no card sold after the price hike, that EU demand was "basically killed", and that US offers add about $300 to $400 of logistics for EU buyers. @lonegladiator (UK) planned to offer eBay sellers 2,199 EUR each, worried about VAT, and found one seller with 2 cards (@stcord noted the seller had done the cap mod) that he planned to buy.

10 GB against 8 GB

The price relationship between the two cards flipped at least twice between July and October. What the 10 GB card unlocks to, and the 80 GB claims behind its early premium, are on The 10 GB card: provenance and the 80 GB question and 10 GB card.

July: the 10 GB card scarce and quoted above the 8 GB card

@eksitus noticed on 2026-07-20 that almost no one sold 10 GB cards, and his one quote had the 10 GB card $200 above the 8 GB. @lxtend saw the 10 GB at about 8000 CNY on Xianyu against 4000 for the 8 GB (he paid 6500 CNY each); @landmark0700_17532 put it at about $1181, bulk only, in China, later about $1000 against $750; @scallion_9883 asked $1000 against $800 in the US. @a.civardagezen attributed the premium to sellers believing the 10 GB to 80 GB unlock works, and @lunaroseoc said nothing above $2K is worth it for the 10 GB card unless you bin them and find a good 80 GB one; asked whether the card was buyable, she answered "Barely". On 07-21 a supplier quoted @robbbbbb7973 $1149 for it, and @_arcanum_ said 10 GB quotes started at about $1.5k, well above the 8 GB card.

September: a few hundred below the 8 GB card, then a surge in China

@colo2442 said on 2026-09-10 that the 10 GB card tends to be a few hundred cheaper than the 8 GB, and @matej87 noted that a Spain-based 10 GB seller had existed before the server's sales section was removed. @onlyinminecraft found 10 GB listings at about 500 USD on Alibaba; @jimtjames said anything cheap is almost certainly a scam and the 10 GB is still a minimum of 1k, and @jjb01957 said cheap 170HX listings are empty boxes or at best defective cards. On 2026-09-14 @djpandaman said 10 GB cards start around $1,800 (about 1,550 EUR) on US eBay, in reply to @anon33anon, who would pay about 1.5k EUR; on 09-15 @cute_sc2 put the 10 GB card in the EU at about 1.5k. On 2026-09-18 @voidgiraffe saw 10 GB prices much higher but still below the 8 GB, the gap closing, and linked it to a Xianyu listing claiming an 80 GB unlock; @_arcanum_ found 10 GB cards either near 8 GB pricing or only with a 100-card minimum, and a 10-card order (about $16k) was refused as "too small". On 2026-09-22 @ob88594 reported unexplained abnormal sales and price increases for the 10 GB card in China, and @tokukarin found the cheapest 10 GB card at 1800 USD.

How sellers behaved

Orders at the old price cancelled after the news (July)

Warning

After the spike, sellers on eBay, Alibaba, AliExpress and Xianyu cancelled orders placed at pre-spike prices. Excuses posted: "the technician found a problem with your card" with no replacement available (@barackorama, @aaron0010), the model sold out market-wide, cards "mixed up" with another shipment, a colleague who had sold the warehouse stock in one bulk shipment (Shenzhen Shengshi, to @decoy.works), "this batch of goods has some defects, new stock in two months" (@robbbbbb7973), and an "issue with buyer shipping address" with no contact (@farawaythrower). @decoy.works signed an Alibaba invoice for 6 cards at $580 each on 2026-07-21 that was later cancelled; @_arcanum_ paid for 10 at 3700 RMB each on Goofish, the seller's supplier cancelled, and the seller offered them at about 6700 RMB and refunded when he declined. @skirtchaser described the chain as buyer, agent, Alibaba company, their contact, mining farm ("a game of telephone"), with the farms raising prices on resellers once eBay passed $1000; he put the chance of sub-$500 orders shipping at about 1%. @rrickk420 had 3 cancellations from separate Chinese sellers while US eBay sellers fulfilled. @barackorama's advice: never cancel yourself; let the seller cancel.

Sellers backing out after the price rose

Alibaba supplier MOZHEN INTERNATIONAL agreed in chat to fulfil an order on a set date, then on the ship date claimed no stock and higher prices, and refused responsibility because no formal payment had been processed (@bentbean_50370, 2026-09-23). Supply and demand

Pearl mining made the cards profitable again from August

@ob88594: the cards come from mining pools; before August 2026 PRL (Pearl) was not mineable, so the cards sold cheaply, and since then Pearl has made them profitable again and upstream supply has been cut off most of the time. Earlier figures: about $1.59 a day per card (@ju5t5omedude, 2026-07-25) and about $1.63 a day (@aluminer_, 07-28). @newman_08462 said on 2026-07-21 that he held over 100 CMP170HX-8G in Guangdong, face-to-face sales only. @_maitops heard of a 3,000-card Pearl operation in the USA and UAE (2026-08-24, doubted). @n3bs (2026-09-24) bought on Facebook Marketplace from a seller who had more cards but stopped selling because Pearl mining is profitable on them, and @gpmickey's seller stopped for the same reason; @gpmickey expects the cards to be worth more to AI buyers once Pearl profitability falls.

Where the stock sat in October

@newman_08462 said on 2026-10-02 that thousands of 170HX rigs still mine Pearl in China and will be sold when the price is attractive; @tokukarin doubts they will sell now that more SMs are unlocked. @ob88594: Pearl fell from 1.6 to 0.99 in a few days, and as of 2026-10-25 no major mining farm is willing to ship and the sourcing cost is 16,000 CNY or more. @redpandamining: Alifond stock is dwindling. @cuddylac997 says his employer holds about 2600 cards. @newman_08462 holds over 100 cards in China but finds selling abroad difficult because eBay's seller threshold is high; a Xianyu seller claims 2000 units, and IT asset disposal exchanges show buyers wanting 1000-card lots. Other October views: speculation on 10-18 that Yandex buying GPUs after a datacentre fire was driving prices; @reggie7756 hoped the Intel D270 160GB would push prices down; @lia_oc: constant new recipes, patches and the sm80 vLLM fork keep raising the cards' utility; @phoenixone7 expects many 40 GB A100s to reach the market as they are swapped out, and @c133 pointed to an eBay listing of 300 racks of 32x A100 40 GB for 59.7 million USD at quantity 2.

Mining value: Pearl about $6 per card per day; the unlock raises resale value

@ob88594 said on 2026-09-23 that Pearl mining yields about $6 per card per day (prefaced with "Just kidding", so the tone is unclear), and that cards able to do both LLM inference and mining will keep rising in price. He says the unlock increases the card's residual value.

Signs of coordinated pricing: miners and dealers withholding stock; a 2899 to 2199 swing

On 2026-07-29 @sekkit_75019 said dealers outnumbered buyers, then that small sellers refused to sell because miners and dealers had agreed to control the market; @decoy.works posted a screenshot from the supplier Ranshuo the same day. @giaki3003 concluded that the miner pulled the plug at $900, and @_____josh_____ said plenty of stock was being hoarded for price discovery and that one seller told him they were working with an influencer to push prices up. On 2026-09-02 @ronnyfish reported 2190 USD on eBay, most likely an Alifond alternate label, with Alibaba at the same level; he said a small number of Chinese vendors control most of the supply and appear to collude to paint the price chart. Two days earlier a vetted vendor (an Alifond sock account or reseller) had raised its price to 2899 and the next day dropped back to 2199.

Supply drying up from late August into October

On 2026-08-28 @vektor_prime found no 8 GB sellers left in the US; @humandrone8721_60165 reported Chinese buyers taking all 8 GB cards, including 5 from his Italian supplier, after a rumoured Chinese unlock breakthrough, and @stcord said Red Panda had made a video on inference companies buying the cards and renting them out. @_arcanum_ said the mining farms know the cards' value and work with big sellers, so nobody is mass-dumping. On 08-30 @cmurrayis said Chinese vendors were struggling to get stock, @deejay9983 had messaged nearly every Alibaba supplier without luck, and @endsjeremy was searching Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia. On 2026-09-02 Alibaba sellers were replying that they had no 170HX stock (@giaki3003 had the same reply a month earlier), and @rrickk420 guessed domestic demand and local farms were absorbing supply. On 2026-09-10 @sojun80 said his supplier could no longer get cards easily and his 4-card server's value had gone from about $4k to about $13k; @quark2world blamed scalpers. Later a supplier with 20 cards refused a group-order discount (@djpandaman, 09-13); new Alibaba offers tried to sell 25 cards at once, so supply was never truly limited (@quark2world, 09-17); and on 2026-10-02 @_arcanum_ said the piecemeal supply in China was gone, with the remaining sellers asking eBay prices or wanting to offload hundreds, while @spectakkular read the refusal to discount as a sign of limited supply.

Demand in China: AI video generation and export limits

On 2026-08-27 @_arcanum_ reported that buyers in China were starting to use the CMP 170HX for video generation to produce AI micro-dramas on Douyin; he was unsure whether Chinese prices follow international or domestic demand. @stcord's summary: Chinese miners held large stocks, US export restrictions limit China's GPU access, and once cmpunlocker was released the cards became sought-after unrestricted inference GPUs, so miners now sell only at high prices.

Many "suppliers" are shell companies or middlemen without stock

On 2026-08-21 @djpandaman could not find the 170HX on Taobao or 1688 and guessed that sellers arbitrage Xianyu listings; @segmond said Chinese sellers list whatever is hot with no inventory and scramble to find a card once ordered, and that many such sellers chasing the few real holders drive prices up. @djpandaman added that there are large inventories in Kazakhstan and Russia poorly connected to Western supply chains (unverified). On 2026-08-26 @_arcanum_ (Hong Kong) said most listed suppliers are shell companies whose listed phone numbers often do not connect. @vektor_prime and @matej87 suspected many sellers resell from someone who does have stock ("call a guy that calls a guy"), while @sojun80 said his reseller works from supplier price sheets, then orders, tests and ships. @matej87 noted that sellers' prices are suspiciously aligned.

How many CMP 170HX exist: estimates from 10k to 400k

Nobody has a production figure; estimates as posted:

  • @quark2world recalled a document saying about 180k were made or sold, then said he had misremembered; he later claimed 10,000 and more ("12kish") and guessed at most about 1,000 sold across Alibaba and eBay in the 30 days to 2026-07-20 Source: @quark2world, 2026-07-19.

Where did the supply go? Miners as "neoclouds"

Who buys 30k to 50k cards? The buyer-pool argument

@machinezer0 argued on 2026-08-03 to 08-06 that the 10 GB card is the single-GPU upgrade over a V100 32GB, the 8 GB card equals two V100 32GB, and the 10 GB card should sell about 20% above an MI50 32GB. He estimated that 30k to 50k units need to move from miners and flippers to AI hobbyists, most of whom avoid Alibaba, freight forwarding, soldering, passive cooling and Linux hacks; without PCIe 4.0 x16 or NVLink out of the box demand stays limited, so he bought 4 rather than 16 to 32. @endsjeremy said prices will drop until the cards have proven themselves as rentals for months.

Vietnam: a mine offering about 1000 cards in person, and a 3,000-card Pearl operation (unverified)

On 2026-08-21 @_arcanum_ said a mine, he thought in Vietnam, wanted to offload 1000 cards, but buyers would have to go in person and handle logistics. @zingy90210 proposed a fund of 100 or more members buying 10 each at about $700, and @voidgiraffe suggested pitting 10 sellers against a group order of 100 units or more. @moliminous argued that bulk pricing depends on one pallet going to one place, which needs a trusted lead buyer, and @_arcanum_ noted that 100 cards is a drop in the pond for these sellers. On 2026-08-23 @stcord said everyone was waiting for a second wave of ex-miner cards. @_maitops talked with someone running 3,000 CMP 170HX across the USA and UAE who says they are still profitable mining Pearl and will run about 3 more years; @smit1237, @giaki3003 and @licensedterrapin suspected a sales pitch.

July 2026: a fall to about $600, or a hold at $1k to $3k?

  • @quark2world (2026-07-20) expected about $600 once sales dry up, given the supply and the cards' age (5 years or more, no warranty); he called the 170HX more like "a hampered A40" without PCIe or NVLink, with a small personal local-AI market Source: @quark2world, 2026-07-20.

Price ceiling theories: the MI210, a fraction of the A100 40GB, NVLink

  • @fallengod9962 (2026-08-12) predicted $4k and more once word spreads Source: @fallengod9962, 2026-08-12.
  • @skirtchaser expected the ceiling to stay below the AMD MI210 64GB, about $3000 in the worst case Source: @skirtchaser, 2026-08-12; on 2026-09-03 he said prices were close to that ceiling, and on 09-09 named the MI210, then $3500 to $4000, as the hard cap, adding that working NVLink could push the card past A100 40GB prices Source: @skirtchaser, 2026-09-09.
  • @djpandaman (09-09): the 170HX price tracks a fixed fraction of the A100 40GB market price; he also guessed $3500 to $4000 Source: @djpandaman, 2026-09-09.
  • @quark2world (09-09): the cards only make sense at about 1000 EUR or less given the risks Source: @quark2world, 2026-09-09; @rrickk420 (09-10): fair value for US businesses is $4k to $5k Source: @rrickk420, 2026-09-10.

In early September @adusts estimated that the Reddit poster with dead cards paid over $1k each, @meromgreen could not afford another card, and @segmond and @licensedterrapin gave up on buying more, expecting no relief until someone with thousands in inventory dumps them.

Mid-September: still rising, or modded cards never command a premium?

  • @ob88594 (2026-09-15): prices keep rising, partly because DeepSeek V4.1 Flash created demand for 6 or more cards Source: @ob88594, 2026-09-15. @xtj7 expects the price could settle at 40 to 50% of an A100's over time, especially if PCIe 4 gets unlocked Source: @xtj7, 2026-09-15.
  • @gpmickey: modded hardware is seen as "hacky tier 2" and will not command a tier-1 premium; his 48GB RTX 4090 barely changed in price in a year, while his RTX Pro 6000 Blackwell roughly doubled Source: @gpmickey, 2026-09-15.

Value by unlock status: about $1k then, $2.5k to $3.5k with NVLink and Gen4

@con3po7016 (2026-09-16): with the unlocks available then, the card is worth about $1k; with NVLink and Gen4 maybe $2.5k to $3.5k; an A100 80 GB sells for about $10k. @segmond expected prices to jump once fuse scripts are released. @wakeupmbrc1 suggested selling cards with defective stacks and buying ones without, and @matstatman joked about a valuation script ("your card is worth 900").

Where prices go next (September 2026)

  • @ins_mniac (2026-09-17): prices had hit a ceiling: no video output, no NVLink or NVSwitch, heavy software and hardware hacking, and full systems cost far more than the cards, so buyers would turn to A100 server equivalents Source: @ins_mniac, 2026-09-17; @spectakkular: the market still does not believe the cards work, while miners offload thousands to a limited buyer pool Source: @spectakkular, 2026-09-17.
  • @con3po7016: for hobbyists who do not depend on 100% uptime the CMP just edges out the other options at about $2,700 Source: @con3po7016, 2026-09-17; @dalzyyy: at $2.5k other options are worth exploring Source: @dalzyyy, 2026-09-17.
  • @_____josh_____ (2026-09-20): the reasonable price is $1k, wait 6 months Source: @_____josh_____, 2026-09-20; @zingy90210 blamed manipulation by Chinese vendors and expected a fall within 6 months Source: @zingy90210, 2026-09-20; @wakeupmbrc1 replied that if PCIe 4.0 or NVLink is figured out, the forecast could become $6k within a month Source: @wakeupmbrc1, 2026-09-20.
  • @voidgiraffe (2026-09-22) expected further increases (DGX Spark supply low, RTX Pro 6000 prices up); @segmond: demand will exceed supply for a long time; @theg9483: no market change before the second half of 2027 Source: @segmond, 2026-09-22

Recollections posted from 2026-07-28 to 09-16

@quark2world gave earlier prices of $450 for ex-mining-rig cards and $650 for new ones (2026-07-28), and later said he paid about 500 per card; @sekkit_75019 paid $1000 each for 9 cards. @reala7096 recalled about 400 EUR when news of the unlock came out and paid about 1300 EUR each in the end, and @licensedterrapin said the price was 1240 GBP when he first talked to Alifond (2026-08-30); @segmond would only have recommended the card to a small business when it was under $500. Between 2026-09-01 and 09-05 @deejay9983 said he ordered from Alibaba when prices were still $900, @chechu10 was offered a card at $1000 before sellers knew of the unlock, and @ins_mniac said Alifond listed at 1550 about a week before 09-01. @gnasherrr ordered 20 cards at $500 each, 16 were cancelled and only 4 arrived, and said he should have bought at $700; @_____josh_____ bought at $800 each expecting a 50% failure rate and called the September market a sucker's market. @djpandaman believed one supplier holding 20 cards had bought them at $250, and @sojun80 paid $1600 around 2026-08-20.

@segmond (2026-09-22) bought 12 at $1,000 each, reasoning that one RTX Blackwell costs about $16,000, and @zingy90210 bought 4 at that price; @zingy90210 said CMPs were about $1,000 four weeks before 2026-09-22. @voidgiraffe bought his first batch at $1,200, the same price as a 3090 then, called $1,000 "insane value", and found the price of his second batch painful. @quark2world paid about $500 each, and @_arcanum_ said he was one of the only buyers whose contract price was honoured. @gpmickey saw reputable sellers at 650 CAD ($461), lost two weeks and money to a scammer, then bought at 1250 CAD ($886), and his second batch cost about twice as much. On 2026-09-08 @skurtdiggler said he bought 3 at about $1,100 to $1,200 (with water blocks) and found the 4th at $2,200, @seriousrising paid under $1,500 each for 2, and @impactic had bought 8 in July.
