Instability under load
More actions
This page covers a CMP 170HX that works at idle but crashes, drops off the bus, throttles or returns wrong output under load. Most reports trace to one of five things: power delivery, heat, too much undervolt, too high an HBM clock, or (on 10 GB cards) unlocked SMs that are not good. Some "bad output" is an engine bug, not the card; that is at the end of the page.
Quick triage
- Find the card. On a multi-card host, swap two devices in
CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES. If the fault follows the physical card, it is the card; if it stays with the pipeline stage, it is not. When several cards crash at random, suspect the weakest one first.

sudo nvidia-smi -i 0 -pl 200(or 180). Several dropout problems below went away at 180 W. The cap goes back to 250 W on every driver load, including a module reload or a VM reboot; re-apply it with a systemd unit after the driver is up. Caps and a live HBM clock setting also reset whenever the vLLM engine starts or restarts, so apply them from a post-start hook.

| Every CMP dropped off PCIe almost at once on large prompts, with PCIe lane errors and IOMMU errors. Small prompts were fine. | 5 cards, individually stable, on an external GPU switch baseboard; mixed host with 6 RTX 3090s; cap mod done. Temperatures and PSU draw within limits; the logs showed the first card drawing 260 W. | Power limit lowered from 250 W to 180 W (chunk size had also been reduced). | Under sustained load, mostly big prompt-processing jobs, all four cards and the PLX board lost power at once and needed 10 s unplugged before working again. | 4x 8 GB on a PLX switch board; two 750 W PSUs, each feeding two cards (one 8-pin CPU plus two 8-pin PCIe per GPU); 24-pin joined with a Y adapter to an always-on plug; cap 175 W; cards under 60 C. | Not resolved in the thread. Hypotheses: one PSU trips on a transient and takes the switch board down, since the PSUs are independent; or the PLX chip overheats under its stock cooler. - Transients. With a 250 W limit, one owner saw instantaneous spikes to 380 W during inference. Another saw nvidia-smi report up to 333 W against a 250 W limit during prefill on every card. Ten cards capped at 160 W peaked near 2000 W together. The cap is enforced as an average: at a 180 W cap, single samples reached 214.6 W. Source: @djpandaman, 2026-10-22 - Power cap above 80 SMs (10 GB). Past 80 SMs the nvidia-smi power cap triggers, the memory clock is forced down to about 1100 MHz and FP32 throughput drops hard. It starts at 82 SMs, not at 80, and an AI-assisted look at the VBIOS found something that looks like a cap. Clock ceilings seen: about 1300 MHz at 80 SMs, 1050-1100 MHz at 120 SMs; log clocks to CSV to see which one is capped, and try undervolting. A card at 122 SMs hit the cap even locked at 1095 MHz, and was already capping at 94 SMs; there was no speed difference between 108 and 122 SMs. Suggested next steps (untested): undervolt first; a shunt mod, ideally after soldering the unpopulated VRM phases. Those are hardware modifications; see Power and cabling warnings. Reported

Undervolt and SM clock offset
Undervolting shifts the V/F curve left so the same clock runs at lower voltage; it can cut power by 25-35%. It is per card, and when it is too deep the card falls over with Xid 31. Unlocked SMs or memory that were factory-disabled may not hold the same voltage as the factory-enabled parts. Step the V/F shift in 30 MHz increments.

Host faults that look like card faults
- Non-ECC host RAM: a host that passed 48 h of memtest still had an unexplained page cache corruption. A test suite reads model weights with O_DIRECT and compares them against the page cache so a host RAM fault is not blamed on the card. Reported

Source: @c133, 2026-10-16 - A host out-of-memory during an eager model load caused Xid 31 and then Xid 154 on every card of a pipeline-parallel job.

Source: @globalapathy, 2026-10-18 - Warning The host's NVMe dropped off the bus under model reads. About a minute after a DeepSeek bench, an 8-card box fell off the network and would not boot: its Crucial T700 2 TB PCIe 5 NVMe (OS and models) on a PCIe-to-M.2 sled with no heatsink or airflow was no longer detected, and the journal was lost with the filesystem. The Engram tables (189 GiB read with 32 threads) were the heaviest sustained read the drive had seen; loading a 420 GB model later took it from 48 to 82 C in under three minutes. Fixed with a heatsink and a fan on the sled, a read-rate cap, and a guard that pauses loads near 79 C. Put model files on a separate drive and cool the boot drive.

Out of memory [NV_ERR_NO_MEMORY]fromsystem_mem.cis host memory fragmentation, not a GPU fault;echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/compact_memorybefore the first boot helps.
