Warning 10 GB

cmp-170hx-rir-burn-util (it calls itself cmp170hx-rir-gen3) is an all-in-one tool for the 10 GB CMP 170HX (10de:2082). It does the permanent one-shot RIR fuse burn that clears the software-override gate, then adds a volatile PCIe Gen3 unlock on top of an existing cmpunlocker Gen2 install. The burn payload comes from 170hx-rir-tool and the Gen3 register recipe from lixiangwuxian/170hx_tips; this tool adds preflight gates, state tracking, a driver patch, a retrain helper, a stress test and rollback. Warning The burn is irreversible and has no retry. A failed preflight or a second write can brick the card. Rollback restores modules and configuration but never the burn. Read Unlocks first; members advise not spending RIR records yet (see 170hx-rir-tool#Before you burn).

Scope

  • 10 GB card only. It refuses the 8 GB card (10de:20c2), which has no free RIR records.
  • Validated only with driver 610.43.03 open modules on Ubuntu 24.04, kernel 6.8.0-147-generic. Gen4 is explicitly not supported.
  • Validated by the author on two 40 GB cards (2026-10-18 and 2026-10-20): both trained Gen3 x4 at boot on x4-wired Gen3 ports, and a 30-minute pinned-memory stress moved about 2.9 TB each way per card with 0 errors, 0 link drops and no Xid or AER. The width stays whatever the slot and the card's capacitors allow.

Requirements

cmpunlocker already installed with the 10gb profile (cards report 40960 MiB), its Gen2 hammer service present, a cmpunlocker checkout whose build files have a pcie_gen3 block, root, kernel headers, and a physical power button: two cold boots are mandatory, after the burn and after installing the Gen3 driver. Commands

status, preflight <bdf>, burn <bdf>, postburn, install [--dry-run], verify, retrain <bdf>, stress [--seconds N], rollback, poweroff. Preflight checks the fuse controller state, that all 8 RIR rows are empty, the main fuse rows, and that the card matches one of two known 40 GB floorsweep profiles before any write. It stops if the RWL bit does not latch, the controller is not idle, the read-back differs from 0x00950015, any Xid, AER or bus error appears, a card goes missing, or a retrain lands below the starting generation. install refuses unless every 10 GB card in the machine has a successful post-burn state: do not mix burned and unburned cards. Caveats

  • Tightly coupled to one cmpunlocker version and driver 610.43.03; the driver patch must apply without fuzz.
  • Largely a hardened wrapper around 170hx-rir-tool and 170hx_tips, with one visible commit and the author's own two-card validation.
  • It treats the 10 GB card as 40 GB and predates any later memory geometry; check the current cmpunlocker before relying on capacities.
