A 2U single-socket EPYC GPU server that takes 8 cards. Several members run it; the trade-off is noise.

What people report

  • 1a2b3c0967 runs 8 cards in a G292. It ships with dual 2200 W PSUs and risers for 8 cards. It sounds like a jet engine, but cools far better than the mining frame he tried first. Source: @1a2b3c0967, 2026-10-04

  • cmdrwaka324 runs 5 CMP 170HX, 2 RTX 3090 and an Intel B60 in one: good BIOS and out-of-band management, an aggressive fan tune keeps idle noise like a big box fan, and the cards stay cool even in a garage in summer. Source: @cmdrwaka324, 2026-10-25

Topology

Each GPU pair sits on its own PCIe switch, so P2P is fast inside a pair and slower between pairs. Check the system block diagram before planning tensor-parallel groups. Source: @cmdrwaka324, 2026-10-26 The G292-Z20 and G292-Z24 are single socket; the 4U G482-Z52 is dual socket, so half the cards would cross the socket to reach the others. Noise

  • A YouTube video ("Taming a 12,000 RPM Jet Engine! Gigabyte G292 2U AI Server Fan Tuning") has a Python script that lowers fan speed; the minimum is still about 3750 to 4000 rpm. Source: @a1rm4x, 2026-10-15

    Source: @voidgiraffe, 2026-10-15
  • Con3po pins fan control to a thermal target (every card's memory or GPU at 75 C max) instead of a curve, which keeps the fans at the minimum they need. Source: @con3po7016, 2026-10-15
  • Not apartment friendly. More in Cooling and power.

Known issues

  • EPS adapters do not fit at the back; use EPS-to-EPS cables. Source: @danske1, 2026-10-26 See Cooling and power for EPS pinout warnings.
